Walkin' Fool

Uncategorized Feb 24, 2019

I know there are days when even getting out of bed is impossible, so the idea of walking seems downright crazy. Well, on those days, it is. On those days, maybe the only exercise you can manage is rolling your ankles around....or your wrists. Well then....roll your ankles around and give yourself a gentle pat for doing your exercise.

But don't let that be an excuse to make ankle rolling your main source of exercise. Back in the 1940s and 50s, smoking was the biggest health risks. Today it's sitting. In research involving over 100,000 people, what became crystal clear is that sitting around all day causes tons of health problems - right up to and including premature death. You've already got a health problem, which is bad enough. If you don't get moving, you're going to be headed downhill from there.

If you're one of the lucky ones with access to a pool, then swimming might be your ticket to regular exercise. It has the advantage of being very gentle on your joints. And if you're...

Chinese Medicine and Sound Healing

Who seeks sound therapy, and how does it relate to Chinese Medicine?

Let's say there's someone who tends to obsess over things, like a dog "worrying" a bone. Another person tends to anger easily. A third person is fearful....etc. And let's say that each of these people has pain. The pain will show up quite differently in each case. One might get stomach aches, another will tend to sprain an ankle or shoulder, while the third one might complain of low back or knee pain. In each case, there is an imbalance in the energy system of that person which incorporates the whole person - not just the bodily tissue involved. This is what underlies the term "Mind-Body Medicine" - something that is beginning to be embraced by western medicine, though it's roots trace back thousands of years to ancient China.

Back then, when the bells at each temple were rung, they noticed that when one bell was struck, the others would resonate. This led to the idea that there was an invisible force that...

Sound, Silence and the Soul

Uncategorized Oct 19, 2018

"The day will come when man will have to fight noise as inexorably as cholera and the plague.” This was said by a Nobel prize winning bacteriologist in 1905 by the name of Robert Koch. I think that day arrived sometime in the last........maybe 100 years? There isn't anywhere you can go, it seems, and get away from noise. Our cities, suburbs, parks -- even in the woods - there's the ever present sound of human activity. I've read that not even the North Pole has silence anymore, what with the jet routes that cut across those skies on their way to another continent.

I need to clarify one thing here. When I say "noise", I'm talking about the sounds that come from human activity, not the sounds of nature itself - which can be very loud. We think of the forest as a place of quiet, but in reality, if you go into the rain forest at night, you'll be greeted by an insane chorus of frogs, all calling at once. It's almost deafening. But our ears evolved to hear those sounds, as well as...

Is Energy Medicine a Hoax?

“If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.”―
                                                                            Nikola Tesla

I'm always looking at articles about healing and health, and I'm always dumbfounded by what is written about so-called "alternative" medicine. For over 25 years I've practiced acupuncture and Chinese medicine - a practice that dates backs thousands of years. And yet, I'm considered "alternative".  Same holds true for sound healing - a practice that exists in practically all cultures all around the world, since the beginning of time. And yet, we are "alternative".

There are scientific studies that are conducted on the "placebo effect", and it is well documented that if a person believes...

"What is the difference between me and the sky?"
The difference, my love,
Is that when you laugh,
I forget about the sky.

What's Sound Healing Got To Do With It?

Not too long ago I had the pleasure of offering a yoga and sound healing event with my friend Cindy Shaw. It was in a beautiful little yoga studio over at the Town and Country Resort in Mission Valley, and we combined some simple warm-up exercises for both the body and the voice - humming.....not demanding that anyone be a singer! Then Cindy took the participants through some simple yoga poses, suitable for anyone, while I played my gongs. This was followed by each participant getting an individual "tune up" with Tibetan bowls and tuning forks. Then we ended with me singing a simple , beautiful chant, accompanied by my shruti box (pictured on the floor next to Cindy.)

The whole time I kept thinking of how blessed I am to be able to live in this space of sound and silence, and to find people who value the healing powers of sound and silence.  In a recent podcast by Krista Tippet, Gordon Hempton - an "acoustic ecologist" (he collects sounds from all over the world) said that...
