What are you thinking right now?
What were you thinking a minute ago?
Can't remember? That's not surprising. Most of us can't. And most of us have no idea what a profound impact on our health our thoughts have.
It's been said that we think something like 50,000 thoughts per day, and that most of those thoughts are the same ones we've thought before, and most are negative. Well designed studies of the brain have shown us that our thoughts have a powerful effect on our physiological functioning. But most of us are more diligent about reading the labels on our food than we are about "reading our thoughts."
Here's what science says about the effects of thoughts on our health:
Take 5 minutes a day to label your thoughts. What do I mean by label? I mean literally saying to yourself "Having a thought............" and then adding in whatever that thought was. "Having a thought my knee hurts." "Having a thought I need to call Sally" "Having a thought I should clean out the litter box".
If labeling seems daunting to you, then you might want to get out some post-it notes and write down those thoughts. One thought per note. Do this for 5 minutes, and then spread those notes out before you. Count up the positive, negative and neutral thoughts, and look for patterns. You might be surprised by what you find! If you do this exercise once a day for a week, you'll definitely see some patterns emerging.
I've done this exercise for years, and I believe it's part of what has lightened me up and allowed me to navigate the rougher waters of my life. I hope this helps you do the same. Please scroll down and leave a comment if you've done this kind of exercise - how has it worked for you? And if you haven't, are you interested in trying? Let us know!
